Add custom fields

Add your own questions to the feedback form beyond subject and message, and choose how each one behaves.

Custom fields let you ask specific questions on your feedback form beyond the built-in subject and message — a department dropdown, a satisfaction rating, a date, or anything else you need. Answers arrive together with the rest of the submission as a conversation in your Inbox.

Field types

Seven field types are available:

  • Text — short responses.
  • Text Area — longer responses, with an adjustable height.
  • Number — quantities and counts, with optional minimum, maximum, and decimals.
  • Date — a single date, a date and time, or a date range.
  • Dropdown — a list of options you define, with an optional "allow multiple selections" mode.
  • Checkbox — a single toggle (for example, "I would recommend this product") or a checkbox group with multiple options.
  • Rating — stars, numbers, or thumbs, with a configurable maximum rating.

Add a field

  1. Open your box and click the Customize tab.
  2. Scroll to the Additional Fields section and pick a type under Add Field.
  3. Give the field a label — this is the question your respondents see. Labels are required.
  4. Optionally toggle Required, and fill in the type-specific options: placeholder text, help text, dropdown or checkbox options, rating style, and so on.
  5. Save the field, then click Save Changes in the bar at the bottom of the page. Field changes are not applied to the live form until you save.

The live preview on the right side of the Additional Fields section updates as you build, so you always see what feedback givers will get.

Reorder, edit, and delete

Drag fields by the grip handle to reorder them. Each field also has edit and delete controls — deleting asks for confirmation, and like every other change it only takes effect once you click Save Changes.

Questions-only forms

Once you have at least one custom field, you can hide the built-in message field in the Subject and Message section to run a pure questionnaire. If you also hide the subject field, your Inbox uses the first answer as the conversation subject. Respondents must answer at least one question to submit. See Customize your form (Build tab) for the full set of form options, and Managing your Inbox for how submissions come in.
